Ink on 3 Magical Unicorn: Rainbow Challenges

This card had a few challenges along the way, so much so, that this card nearly didn’t happen. But luckily it all worked out in the end.

Ultimately when you choose to go the rainbow route what colours should you choose for the rest of the card. The plan from the get go was to create a rainbow unicorn. And initially I was really happy with how the zig clean real brush markers blended to create a rainbow mane and horn. But then how to handle the flowers; rainbow would be just too much, perhaps some light pinks and greens? Nope it just didn’t work. So next I basically went over the flowers with some neutral grey tones to almost give it a black and white feel with a hint of colour. In the end I think it worked.

Next how to handle the background so it has interest but doesn’t compete with the rainbow colours. I wanted to give it some glitter and shine, since after all that seems fitting for the magic that surrounds unicorns. So I went with a pretty neutral light blue ink colour and moonstone glimmer paste over a sun ray stencil. Here is where disaster almost struck. I discovered when the paste had dried that I could not get the mask off the unicorn. The mask was so glued on, it would tear when I tried removing it leaving behind white bits and pulling ink away from the image. I have no clue what I did, whether I added glimmer paste to soon after ink blending over the mask or perhaps I should have removed mask while the glimmer paste was still wet. Lucky for me I have a hubby who has the patience for fiddly stuff, he sat and very carefully took the time, bit by bit, working to remove the mask and save my card from the trash.

Get the look:

  • Most of the work and joy of this card is using the zig clean real brush markers to colour this really lovely large unicorn stamp from Ink on 3.

  • Once the image has been coloured, couple of options a) create a mask to cover the unicorn  so background can be ink blended or b) continue to use zig clean real brush markers to create a colour wash over background.

  • This is point where I think my troubles began with the mask gluing to the image. (If you missed the saga it can be found at top of page.) So I recommend at this point replacing mask with a clean mask that is not saturated in ink. Lay sun ray stencil over the masked unicorn and using spatula spread out a layer of moonstone glimmer embossing paste.

  • Now make sure to wash stencil right away so the embossing paste doesn’t glue to the stencil and just to be safe very carefully remove the mask covering the unicorn.

  • Set aside to dry, white white embossing on black card the sentiment. Lastly add panel to a card base.
