Cheeky Monkey

It has been fun guest designing at Your Next Stamp. Thanks for having me!

You can’t help but look at this monkey and smile. He is so cheeky, which is what made me want to do a fun colourful background. I never tire of creating with regular or oxide distress inks, they never disappoint. Which is why I think they are a favourite for me to use in my craft room.  I seem to go through phases as to which one I prefer to create with regular or oxide distress ink.  Oxide I find creamy and softer where as regular inks tend to be brighter. And this monkey screams bright.

Since I ended up with 2 coloured cheeky monkeys I decided in addition to creating a card I would also pull together a tag. Add some bright colour wrapping paper and you have a great little gift wrapping gift set for someone.

Get the Look:

  • Stamped my monkey out a couple of times on copic friendly card and coloured him in, leaving space behind him white.  I wasn’t sure what colour combination would make a good monkey so I played around with some different combinations. In the end I like how they both looked.

  • I traced a circle die on water colour paper so I knew roughly how how much area I needed to cover.

  • Pulled out a rainbow of regular distress inks and simply smooshed them on my mat and painted them onto the watercolour paper. I dried with a heat gun and added a second layer.

  • Since I had the inks out I decided to create a gradient rainbow that I die cut a tag out of.

  • Die cut the rainbow out with a circle die and then again with a slightly smaller circle die. So I ended up with 2 pieces - a large rainbow circle and a rainbow circle frame. The pieces can be offset when finally mounting the card.

  • Cut out the monkey, but if you have dies feel free to use them.

  • Positioned coloured monkey over the rainbow circle to work out what colours needed to be coloured where to match background. Pulled out some copics that were close colour match to the rainbow background and filled in white spaces.

  • Did the same for the other monkey on the tag.

  • All that is left is to build the cards and add the sentiment.

  • On the tag I just mounted the monkey with foam tape. To add some extra fun to the card, I made the monkey wobble and wiggle by attaching him with an action wobbler.

  • Finally add to card bases.
