Easy Way to Create Skinny Strips

The Ellen Hutson Skinny Stripes die has been around for a while, but it is a new one to me. I love that you can make a very impactful background simply by using the die and some colourful colouring. I could have used colour paper but a) I figured it would be faster to colour strips and b) I certainly don’t have that many colours of card stock to pick from. Conveniently the skinny stripes die is the perfect size for your typical 3 1/2” x 8 1/2” slim line card.

The slim line card I coloured strips with Copics and the other card I blended distress ink onto the die cut strips.

Get the Look:

  • Die cut a slim line card panel either using a slim line die or simply cut a 3 1/2” x 8 1/2” rectangle.

  • Using the skinny stripes die position at one end of the panel and die cut. At this point the stripes will not be cut across the entire panel. Line up skinny stripe die so that it is positioned to cover the other half end of card and partially die cut.

  • Pick out your copic colour scheme. Take all the loose strips of card and colour with copics, repeating pattern as necessary. I purposely picked out the number of colours based on repeating colour pattern twice.

  • Take a card base 3 1/2”x 8 1/2” and run tape runner all over top, place die cut panel on top and then in lay in your colour stripes.

  • Colour in the critter, die cut and fussy cut out. Position and adhere on top of the inlaid panel.

  • Emboss and adhere a sentiment stip. In my case I die cut a ribbon shape for my sentiment.

  • Take an A2 card base in a complimentary colour to your strips and run tape runner over top, place die cut panel on top and then in lay in your colour stripes.

  • Colour in your focal image, die cut and fussy cut out. Position and adhere on top of the inlaid panel.

  • Emboss the sentiment beneath your image.
